  • Are You Accountable for Your Veterinary Team's Future?

I recently came across a post-game interview with a successful women's basketball coach. Despite a hard-fought victory, she expressed disappointment in her team's initial performance and took full responsibility for their slow start. "When you play like that," she said, "you're just not mentally where you need to be, and that's on me."

Accountability in Veterinary Leadership

This level of accountability is rare in leadership, but it's an important ingredient for success. How many veterinary leaders do you know who take ownership of their team's mindset and performance, rather than simply dictating orders and expecting blind obedience? In my experience, many managers default to the "I've told them what to do, and if they don't want to do it, they can leave" approach.

This approach might work in some industries, but in the veterinary field, where compassion, collaboration, and expertise are paramount, it can spell trouble. When team members feel undervalued and unheard, their morale suffers, and their performance declines. This can lead to high turnover rates, decreased productivity, and ultimately, compromised patient care.

The Myth of Changing People

Leaders who believe their role is change a team's behavior or attitude is fundamentally flawed. You cannot force someone to change; lasting change comes from within.

The good news is that you can empower your team members to change themselves. By fostering a culture of growth, providing the necessary resources and support, and demonstrating the behaviors you want to see, you can inspire your team to reach their full potential.

The Power of Ownership

Instead of trying to change your team, focus on cultivating a sense of ownership. When team members feel ownership of their work and are invested in the success of the practice, they are more likely to go above and beyond, take initiative, and contribute innovative ideas.

Ownership isn't about micromanagement or control. It's about empowering your team to make decisions, take responsibility for their actions, and contribute to the practice's overall success. This requires trust, open communication, and a willingness to let go of the reins.

The Opportunity for Leaders to Foster Ownership

As a leader, you have a unique opportunity to create an environment where ownership can thrive. This involves:

  • Setting Clear Expectations: Ensure that your team understands the practice's goals, values, and standards of care.
  • Providing Resources and Support: Give your team the tools, training, and mentorship they need to succeed.
  • Encouraging Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
  • Celebrating Success: Recognize and reward individual and team achievements.

By embracing these practices, you can create a high-performing team that is passionate about their work, committed to the practice's success, and dedicated to providing exceptional care to their patients.

Accountability: The Key to Veterinary Practice Success

Accountability isn't about blame or punishment. It's about acknowledging your role in shaping your team's outcomes and taking proactive steps to foster growth and improvement.

When you cultivate a culture of accountability within your veterinary practice, you create an environment where everyone feels empowered to take ownership of their work, learn from their mistakes, and continuously strive for excellence. This leads to higher engagement, better patient care, and ultimately, a more successful practice.
